Visiting Hours

General Visiting Hours: Open. Public hospital entrances are locked between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
NICU: Visitation is coordinated with the baby's treatment schedule. Visitation is limited to people designated by the baby's mother.
Maternal/Infant Unit: Visitation is limited to two support people during labor. One support person may attend a cesarean section.
Rehab: Visitation for primary caregivers is open. Visiting for other family members and friends is: Weekdays - 4 p.m. - 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday - Noon - 9 p.m.
Critical Care: Visiting times: 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m. Three visitors at a time. Immediate family only. Please limit visits to 15 minutes. Visitors must be at least 12 years old. Always speak with a staff member before entering the unit. No food or drink in patient rooms.Visiting hours are subject to change based on a patient's medical condition.

PARKING

Free Parking is available all around our hospital, as well as adjacent to the Medical Office Buildings located beside the hospital.

Free Valet Parking: This is available at the Atrium front entrance on weekdays.

YOUR ACCOMMODATIONS

Calling Your Nurse: When you arrive at your room, you will be shown how to use the Call System and how to operate your electric bed and your television. If you have a problem, or are out of bed and feel ill, please use the Call System for assistance. For your convenience, additional Call Systems have been placed in all patient bathrooms.

Television: A remote control television set with a pillow speaker is provided for each patient. Patients may choose from a wide variety of programs. Here is the Channel lineup:

Telephones:  From your room, dial 9 then your number for Local calls. There is no charge for local and in-house calls. For long distance within the '804' area code, dial 7 + 0 + area code + the telephone number. This will give you an outside operator. You may process your call with a calling card number or charge it to your home phone number. If you have any problems placing your call, dial '0' for the hospital operator.

Housekeeping: Every effort is made to keep the patient rooms and hospital clean and comfortable. Your satisfaction with the cleanliness of your room is very important to the Housekeeping staff. If you have an urgent housekeeping need, please dial '0' and ask the operator to page the Housekeeping Supervisor for assistance.

FOOD SERVICE

Nutrition Services: Your diet is prescribed by your physician. A seven-day cycle menu and preference sheet will be placed in your room. Using the menu as a guide, please fill out the preference sheet you received when you were admitted. The food preference sheet will be picked up and returned to Nutrition Services. Alternatives to the selections on the cycle menu are available upon request. If your physician orders a diet consult, a clinical dietitian will be available to talk with you. Proper nutrition is an important factor in the recovery from illness; therefore, no food should be brought to you or eaten by you unless your physician or nurse gives permission.

Cafeteria: A variety of hot entrees, hot sandwiches, salads, desserts, snacks and beverages are available in the cafeteria. The cafeteria is open daily during the following hours:

Breakfast:  6:30 a.m. - 9 a.m.
Lunch:  11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Dinner:  4:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Vending: Light snacks and refreshments are available in the Hospitality Shops in the Atrium, in the Surgery Center, and in the Emergency Room waiting area.

Subway Sandwich Shop: Located on the first floor of the hospital. Open daily 8 a.m. - 11 p.m.

Guest Food Trays: Guest trays are available for a nominal charge. Orders for guest trays should be placed with the nursing station at least two hours prior to the next meal.

FOR YOUR SAFETY AND SECURITY

Cellular Phones: For the safety of our patients, cellular phone use is prohibited within critical care areas. Signs indicating this are posted in all restricted areas. In other patient care areas, use of these devices is prohibited within 10 feet of patient care equipment.

Smoking: CJW Medical Center is tobacco-free. The use of tobacco products, including cigarettes, are prohibited in or on all buidings, grounds, parking lots and vehicles on the campuses of CJW Medical Center.

Fire Drills: For your protection, the hospital conducts fire and disaster drills regularly. If a drill occurs while you are here, please remain in your room and do not become alarmed. The staff will provide you with further instructions.

Electrical Appliances: Due to safety and fire regulations, most small electrical appliances cannot be approved for use within the hospital. Items you may bring are hand-held hair dryers, electric curlers, shavers and curling irons with bristles. However, these items must first be reviewed by the nursing staff for safety prior to use. The hospital is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen appliances.

Valuable or Lost Items: A hospital safe is available if you must bring valuables to the hospital, but it is preferable that such items be left at home with family and friends. The hospital cannot be responsible for loss of money or valuables.

When not in use: Dentures, eyeglasses or contact lenses should be placed in suitable containers. The hospital cannot be responsible for loss or damage of such articles, but will make every effort to assist you in the careful storage of these items.

Lost Items: Personal items that have been lost, misplaced or left behind by you or your visitors may have been turned in to our lost and found in the Security Department. Call 330-2000, extension 5801.

GIFT SHOP

Volunteers operate the hospital's two Gift Shops located in the Main Lobby and the Atrium. The Gift Shops offer fresh flowers, gifts, cards, periodicals, toiletries and many assorted items that visitors and patients may purchase. Proceeds from the shops are used to provide health career scholarships for employees, volunteers and their families.

Gift Ship Hours:
Monday - Friday: 9 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Gift Guidelines for Patients: Visitors should check with the nurse before bringing gifts of food or drink to patients. Please check with the nurse or make sure your gift is appropriate. On the intensive care units, please check with the unit regarding any gifts for patients.

WAITING AREAS

There are specially designated lounge areas for visitors on most floors and in the Main Lobby. Specific waiting areas have been designated for families of patients in the critical care units, the emergency department and surgery.

PASTORAL CARE

The services of a chaplain are available to patients and their families at any time upon request or referral. Area clergy of various denominations and faiths assist the hospital chaplain in providing emotional and spiritual support during a time of illness or crisis. The nursing staff will be glad to contact the chaplain or any other clergy person you may wish to see. The Chapel, located on the first floor, is non-sectarian and open to patients and visitors for meditation 24 hours a day.

SPECIAL SERVICES 

Mail and Flowers: Volunteers deliver mail and flowers to patient rooms. Mail delivered to the hospital after you are discharged will be forwarded to you. Friends and family may also send patients e-mail while in the hospital. Click here for more information.

Newspaper: The local newspaper is available for purchase daily.

Banking Services: A Bank of America Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is available across from the Main Lobby on the first floor.

Notary Public: The services of a Notary Public may be obtained through your nurse between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

For the Hearing Impaired: Patients who are hearing impaired may request a telecommunications device. Patients may also request a telecommunications device to communicate with a hearing-impaired relative or friend. Arrangements can be made to have a person who uses sign language help a hearing-impaired or deaf patient.

Reading Service/Vision Impaired:  The hospital makes the broadcast of the Virginia Voice audio reading service available on television channel 21.  Patients with low vision or physical disabilities that prevent them from reading can listen to broadcast readings of the Richmond Times-Dispatch and other local newspapers, magazines, and national periodicals.

Interpreters: The hospital has access to interpreters for a number of languages should a patient require it.

Hotel Discounts: Many hotels are located within an easy drive of the hospital and several offer reduced rates to our patients' family members. Just check with the Information Desk or hospital operator to receive a current list of participating hotels.

FINDING YOUR WAY

To more easily direct you throughout our campus, we have posted a combination of overhead and wall directories. Plus, our friendly staff and volunteers are always glad to help you locate your destination within the hospital.

Whether you are a patient, family member or visitor, we are available to address any questions or concerns that you may have about our services. A representative can be reached by calling (804) 330-2335.

LOCATING YOUR DOCTOR'S OFFICE

In addition to our outstanding hospital services, we house the offices of more than 225 physicians and medical professionals. Offices are located in the Atrium within the hospital and in the Medical Office Buildings located behind the hospital.

GOING HOME

When the doctor decides you are ready to leave the hospital, a discharge order will be written. You may want to make arrangements with a family member or friend to help you when it's time to go home. The following are some important things to remember.

Checkout Time: Please make arrangements to leave your room by 11 a.m. on the day of discharge. If you anticipate difficulties in leaving on time, contact your nurse.

Discharge Instructions: Instructions will be given to you before you leave the hospital. These instructions may include information about your medication, diet and a return appointment to see your physician. If home medical equipment or home health care is ordered by your physician, the Social Work Department may coordinate this for you.

Home Health Care and Medical Equipment: A full service Medicare-certified home health care agency is available through the hospital. They can provide you with a wide variety of services including nursing; home infusion; pharmacy, physical, speech and occupational therapy; medical social services, and home medical equipment. Courtesy Discharge: Once your account has been settled you will be given a courtesy discharge. A hospital representative will escort you to whatever transportation you have waiting at the main entrance.

Walgreens On-Site Pharmacy: Walgreens Pharmacy at CJW Johnston-Willis is a full-service pharmacy staffed by knowledgeable pharmacists. More than simply a retail pharmacy, Walgreens at CJW Johnston-Willis offers patients compassionate care, a convenient location and more, including:

  • Confidential, one-on-one patient counseling
  • Help staying on track with medications
  • Bedside delivery
  • Acceptance of most insurance plans
  • Flexible refill options by phone, in person, online or automatically
  • The ability to pick up medications at any of the more than 6,000 Walgreens in the U.S. and Puerto Rico
  • Immunizations administered right at the pharmacy
